Foods Low in Cholesterol
When searching for low cholesterol foods, it is important to remember that cholesterol is only found in animal products, and plant-based foods have no cholesterol. Therefore, fruits, vegetables, legumes, and whole grains should be a major part of any low cholesterol diet. Breads, cereals, pasta and rice are also low in cholesterol, as long as they are not prepared by using high-cholesterol eggs, butter, or milk.
When looking for meat products, all products that come from an animal will have some cholesterol, but there are low cholesterol options. Chicken, turkey, and fish are all relatively low in cholesterol, but it is important to remember to remove any skin that may be on a meat product. Although these foods are lower low cholesterol options, they should still be consumed in moderation. The total amount of meat recommended to be eaten while on a low cholesterol diet is five ounces or less per day or less.
There are some meat substitutes that are lower in cholesterol that can be consumed instead of actual meat. Dry peas, beans, and tofu are all lo in cholesterol. Beans and dry peas also have a lot of fiber, which can actually help to lower blood cholesterol levels.
When choosing dairy foods, there are a variety of foods that are low in cholesterol. Low-fat or nonfat yogurt, fat free or one percent milk, fat-free or low-fat cheeses, and low-fat cottage cheese are all low cholesterol options. Snack foods like light popcorn, pretzels, tortilla chips, angel food cake, JELLO, and pudding are all acceptable for consumption while on a low cholesterol diet.
